A Lancashire County Library and Information Service directory of some of the best sites for exploring your family's history on the World Wide Web. PLEASE BE AWARE:To access information on some websites, users may be required to register (which requires a valid e-mail address), and some websites may require payment by subscription, the use of vouchers, or 'pay-as-you-go'. The records available from Ancestry.com may be accessed FREE of charge via 'AncestryLibrary' which is only available on the People's Network PCs within all branches of Lancashire Libraries.   • 1911 Census.org.uk - General Information on all the censuses and details of the 1911 Census. The next census that will be available to the public will be the eagerly awaited 1911 census. In recent years, census information has been closed, certainly for family history purposes, for 100 years which is why the latest generally available to the public is that taken in 1901. The National Archives were planning to make the 1911 census available in January 2012 but a ruling by the Information Commissioner in December 2006 means that the National Archives have been forced to make the information available now.

  • Convicts at Lancaster & Convict Transportation Database - Lists all the people tried and sentenced at Lancaster Assize about whom we have some definite evidence. The people mentioned were tried at the Castle and sentenced to various punishments, including fines, imprisonment, Transportation to Australia as well as those who were sentenced to death. Please note that often a sentence of death was recorded but not carried out. Transportation to America: we have a limited amount of information on people sent to America in the years prior to Independance. We would love to know more!
