  • AMERICA 20XX - EXTREME POLITICAL SCIENCE FICTION - AMERICA 20XX is a sci-fi political satire that follows America's last superheroes, The Power Patriots, as they battle the twin dangers of an evil computer virus and civic apathy. The show itself is a modern-day homage to both the political philosophy of Alexis de Tocqueville and every sci-fi cliché known to man. AMERICA 20XX will debut at the 2008 New York International Fringe Festival AMERICA 20XX has no explicitly partisan agenda. You won't see George Bush dressed up as chimpanzee* since that would simply insult your intelligence and just bore the shit out of you. Instead, AMERICA 20XX diagnoses contemporary problems that are a lousy deal for all Americans, including the shitty Constitutional precedent set by indefinite extradition, party polarization along zero-sum issues, and how modern technology is boning the American civic ideal. AMERICA 20XX gives no easy answers since, well, it's a 70 minute sketch comedy show. If the show leaves you unsatisfied, go talk to the MacArthur Foundation or something.

  • Maieutic Theatre Works - The Play - #Anaïs Nin Goes to Hell by David Stallings, is an existential comedy with a strong ensemble cast of characters. This new play explores the question of whether Sartre was right and hell really is other people, or whether we carry around our potential for damnation or salvation within ourselves. The play opens on an island off the coast of Hades where five women have been stranded for centuries. They are Heloise (a twelfth century nun), Andromeda (a Grecian princess), Victoria (Queen of England), Joan of Arc (soldier and prophet), and Cleopatra (queen of Egypt). Each woman waits for the love of her life to come and rescue her—except for Joan of Arc who is waiting for God himself. They cannot leave the island out of fear of a giant Hydra that reputably circles the island and eats any who attempt to escape. These lively women are each stuck in her own century and time—never willing to release old wounds or failures. Their world is turned upside down however when twentieth century erotica writer and psychoanalyst, Anaïs Nin is shipwrecked on their shore. Anaïs reinvents her life long struggle to awaken autonomy and self-confidence in this band of women. She also struggles with inner turmoil—never knowing if her only purpose is to see in others what she cannot see in herself. At the climax of her fight, her purpose is endangered when a man swims ashore. He gives the group hope in finding their men and ending their time in solitude. Each woman must decide whether she has evolved beyond what she was in life and if her goals have changed. Discoveries are made as some of the women transform and enliven—realizing that they do not need to be defined by their past achievements or views. In the end, some women change and some do not, but Anaïs is still left alone in her question; once the use of our battle is over, once we have won or failed…do we still have a purpose?
  • monamie productions - Somewhere at the edge of your mind there is a bus stop where Marsha sits and waits. Suspended between hope for a romantic saviour, and her final departure, she sucks and chews, giggles and ponders. Ghost Story meets Hipster Satire. Out of the multicultural hum of the young artist's scene in Montreal comes this groundbreaking character, Marsha Kane, champion of her generation. Marsha is in a state between reality and the unknown, she is trapped in the moment between life and death, and her entire being is journeying outside the box of safely tucked away dreams- she is about to blast-off. Why is Marsha such a symbol of her time? We'll tell you the best theory we have come up with as of yet : Our North-American atmosphere, the paradigm within which we're all growing and changing is one that is infected with the constant imminent threat of apocalypse. Yes, I hate to be that dramatic, but we're all thinking about it in the back of our minds- 'When are our natural resources going to run out?' Or, 'Who is going to drop the next atom bomb?' and a whole myriad of other apocalyptic possibilities are looming in our potential futures. The combination of that threat, and the political reality of how (supposedly) paralyzed we all are to change the climate of the global economy makes us collectively go into a blissful state of denial coated with the residue of intense fear and paranoia.
  • Navigating FringeNYC: A User's Guide - July 28, 2008 - The New York Sun - Navigating FringeNYC: A User's Guide By TOM TEODORCZUK | July 28, 2008 As with Forrest Gump's metaphorical box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get at the New York International Fringe Festival, or FringeNYC. Witness a "hipster satire meets Hamlet" catastrophe and it could put you off the theater for a while to come. The list of productions that started out at the FringeNYC and enjoyed illustrious stage lives, however, is long.

Rebecca tells Sally that she has been raped and hands her the box, which, she insinuates, contains her attacker’s penis. Horrified, Sally tries to call the police, but Rebecca intercedes and ties her up. Rebecca idealizes Sally for having written The Alice Complex, a seminal book of 1970s feminism, but Sally no longer believes in her former revolutionary ideas. Feeling betrayed, Rebecca interrogates Sally to find out why she’s turned her back on her beliefs. What’s really inside the white box, and what’s the real reason Sally doesn’t teach The Alice Complex anymore? Past, present and future collide in this psychological thriller about inspiration and betrayal between two women of different generations.

  • The Corn Maiden - THE CORN MAIDEN is an ensemble-based multimedia stage adaptation of lauded novelist Joyce Carol Oates's brutally provocative novella THE CORN MAIDEN: A LOVE STORY. We've been accepted by FringeNYC for this August (2008) and are in the throes of assembling our cast and creative team. THE STORY Three Westchester teen girls kidnap their 11-year-old schoolmate to be the subject of their own version of the Onigara Indian Corn Maiden ritual. WHY WE LOVE IT Oates's novella is a disturbing look at the inner lives of the people embroiled in Marissa Bantry's kidnapping, from Leah -- Marissa's weak-willed single mom -- to the girls -- Jude, the 14-year-old mastermind behind the plot and her two followers, Anita and Denise -- to Mikal, the aloof 30-something computer TA and unknowing object of Jude's obsession. They all live just slightly under the radar, having built their lives on little white lies that come back to haunt them when Marissa's kidnapping unleashes a floodlight of exposure.
WHAT WE'RE DOING WITH IT Our intrepid team of videographers will be filming Leah, Jude, Anita, Denise, Mikal and Marissa's inner lives -- their secret thoughts, hopes, dreams, nightmares and individual ways of seeing the world -- toward creating a uniquely textured theatre production that imaginatively blends video and animation with live actors and elements. Our motley crew, composed of artists from the experimental, new play, indie film, visual arts, music and musical theatre worlds alike, aims to immerse you in this story and characters in exciting new ways.

  • there will come soft rains -
Sinking Ship Productions is proud to present the world premiere of There Will Come Soft Rains as part of the 11th annual New York International Fringe Festival. Using puppets, live video, light bulbs and bedsheets, Sinking Ship brings to the stage stories by Ray Bradbury, Stanislaw Lem (author of Solaris), Bill Pronzini and Barry N. Malzberg, iconic and iconoclastic masters of the genre.
To bring the stark, powerful imagery of these stories to the stage, director/adaptor Jon Levin (recently singled out by nytheatre.com for his "remarkable" puppet work) uses a combination of bunraku-inspired puppets, object manipulation, dance, live music and a versatile ensemble of performers.
  • TRIUMPH of the UNDERDOG -
Geeks! Dorks! Fanboys! Lend your pointed ears! Peter Howell's mind-bending lecture on the history of Science Fiction might save your life... literally. Can the washed-up author really prevent an astronomical catastrophe threatening to annihilate the entire solar system?

TRIUMPH OF THE UNDERDOG is a one-person show written by Mitch Montgomery and Morgan Allen. Disillusioned Science Fiction author Peter Howell frantically speeds through the history of Science Fiction — from Mesopotamia to NASA and Star Trek in twenty minutes — pausing only long enough to lament his failed career and his recent unemployment. In lieu of a more traditional structure, TRIUMPH OF THE UNDERODG is presented with all the usual trappings of an actual lecture – PowerPoint slides, anecdotal stories and, you know, suddenly having to save the world from fiery cosmic destruction!
