Sites like the old MP3.com--lots of artists in lots of genres. I've also tossed a few record label sites in here--this is pretty much anything with more than one artist that isn't streaming. Sites without comments are probably ones I haven't explored very much. Listener beware.

  • *SIXEYES - Music blog--the mp3s linked here seem to be pointing at sites owned by the singers, so I'm thinking these are legal freebies. Yay!

  • ACIDplanet.com: Home
  • Afropop Worldwide - This is a pay-for-music site--I'm told they have 99 cent downloads, much like iTunes and some of the other guys. I think this may be DRM free, but I don't know for sure. They do have free streams and a free single twice a week. I haven't checked what the registration is like and can't vouch for the site's spam-inducing quotient, either. Still. Pretty cool. \n \n"African Music, African Music Albums, African Musicians, African Bands, Reviews, Labels, Discographies, and more, from Afropop Worldwide, the experts on African music"
  • Amie Street - Music Lives Here - Interesting music download site. Songs are free when they're not very popular. As songs get downloaded more, the price goes up, to a maximum of 98 cents. DRM free. If you recommend songs to others and those songs get popular, then you get credit for music. I haven't explored it much, but it is a fascinating idea.
  • boom selection - takin it back to tha old skool
  • dmusic.com | Your Digital Music Oasis - dmusic.com | Your Digital Music Oasis
  • Doing some housekeeping on the public folders - I'm doing a bit of fiddling in the various folders I've got public. I just discovered that the rss feeds for the subfolders on the public folders don't work. Dunno why, but I'll be rearranging things to get rid of the subfolders. I might just move all the folders to top level, though that seems a little untidy to me. Or I might put all the links currently in subfolders into the main folders with tags or something on the item names. We'll see. The goal, though, is to get the rss feeds to include all the links somehow. \n
\nSorry for the moving and screwups.
  • Downloads of Australian music from "Home and Hosed." - This is a site with mp3 downloads of songs featured on an Australian music-interview show called "Home and Hosed."
  • Free Music Download, MP3 Music, Music Chat, Music Video, Music CD, ARTISTdirect Network - Some downloads, some streaming. It isn't totally clear, but wmv files with a horizontal arrow are streaming only. The MP3 format files with a down arrow are the downloadable ones.
  • GarageBand.com
  • Go Home Productions - Site with lots of song mashes (mixing two unrelated songs into one)
  • GODS OF MUSIC - "Music Reviews For The Independent Music Scene" \nThe GoM reveiws have led me to some pretty good stuff. I haven't run into any reviews that I disagreed with yet. Recommended. \n
  • Irdial-Discs A212 Version 2 - Songs for free download from the indie record label Irdial.
  • kuro5hin.org || Snubbing the RIAA, Part I - Rundown of different free/legal music sites
  • Magnatune: try before you buy MP3 music. - "non evil" record company
  • Mashmix.com - News
  • MFA | Music and Other Social Causes - MFA | Music and Other Social Causes
  • MP3 music download website, eMusic - Non-DRM music download service. Totally legal downloads. Yay!
  • MP3tunes.com
  • music.download.com - Not up and running yet (4/8/04). Will be an mp3 download site. \n
  • Remix Fight! - Coolness! "An ongoing collaborative remix project where independant musicisians remix each other" (Description from Boingboing.net). Since these are remixes of indie things you've never heard, they have links to the originals, too. I haven't listned to it yet, but the concept is way cool, and I'm thinking it will be really neat.
  • Smithsonian Global Sound - Yes, *that* Smithsonian. A pay-for-music site. I'm told it's DRM free and you can get FLAC files if you choose (apparently a big deal if you're a major audiophile, but I don't know nuttin' abou them). You can also get PDFs of liner notes, apparently. Looks like a good service, but I haven't used them, so I don't know what they'll do to your spam quotient.
  • SUB POP RECORDS - SUB POP RECORDS
  • The Best Media in Life is Free - BLog about creative commons licensed music and places to get free, legal downloads.
  • THE TOFU HUT - Long list of sites with mp3 downloads. Not all the downloads are fully legal in the "the artist knows and approves" sense, but they at least fall (in the opinion of the person who compiled the list) under fair use--they're rare, or out of print, or somesuch.
\nThe site owner says, "A musicblogger/audioblogger/MP3blogger is a person who offers interesting, out of print, rare or otherwise engaging music to people at no charge, out of love for the sound and to promote artists that they would like to see get more popular. I'm not prejudiced; I also include record label sites, artist's personal sites, people who aggregate the daily adventures of other musicbloggers into digests... I like em all. What you WON'T find in here are file directories without commentary or sites offering a full album that is currently in print. Audioblogging is NOT about piracy; it's about selectively sharing sounds."
    \n \nSounds good to me. \n
  • UltimateMetal.com - Supporting The Metal Underground. Forums, Discussion, Interviews, Reviews
  • Webjay - Listener Created Radio - I don't really know anything about this yet.
  • World Music Downloads at CalabashMusic :: Calabash Music - Another pay-for-music site. Possibly DRM free, world music. They have a free "daily single"--on the day I visited, it looked like it was the same thing Afropop was offering. Don't know what kind of registration they require or how it will affect your spam quotient.
